Our Design Process

Named for its whale-like attributes, the ‘Cetacean’ was voted as the most favourable of three designs proposed to the Busselton community through public consultation.

Inspired by a manoeuvre that whale watchers call “Spy Hop”, which is when an inquisitive whale raises its head and eye just clear of the surface to do its own bit of watching back at us.

The Maldives Story

Known for its exceptional underwater diversity and calm, crystal-clear waters, Bar Atoll offers an utterly serene escape in the abundant odyssey of the Maldives. Together with AIMA construction, baca designed a resort which brings the ocean to your doorstep creating an intersection where hospitality meets sustainability in the Maldives’ only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The developer is behind world-renowned properties found in the portfolios of Cheval Blanc and the Ritz Carlton in the Maldives. Together with baca, we designed their first independently developed island resort to delight the senses.

Step into the Realm of Leisure and Hospitality Design: Where Elegance Meets Escape

Designing the perfect GETAWAY

Our design philosophy is rooted in a profound respect for the natural world - we build immersive spaces that allow people to reconnect with nature, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious luxury.

Nature’s Reception

The Arrival Pavilion is inspired by nature. This sculptural structure blends organically into the landscape, creating a first impression of the raw elegance of nature itself and signalling the resort’s commitment to design that reflects its environment.

Soundscapes of the Canopy

The Waterfall Spa elevates wellness experiences with a biophilic design nestled within the treetops. Spa pods with panoramic ocean views enhance guests' connection to the landscape, while treatment rooms and open-air relaxation spaces create a sanctuary above the forest canopy. This immersive design celebrates the balance between wellbeing and nature.

Dining Experiences

Rooted in Local Culture, Five unique dining venues elevate the culinary journey, using handcrafted furnishings and locally sourced materials to create refined, natural settings. A standout treetop dining experience features elevated walkways that guide guests to secluded pods in the forest canopy, offering intimate dining spaces with sweeping views. Inspired by both local and global cuisines, the design emphasizes the play of light and shadow, enhancing the sensory experience.

Commitment to Sustainability and Coral Restoration

Environmental sustainability drives the resort’s design and operations, with a focus on safeguarding the delicate ecosystem of the Baa Atoll.

1. Harnessing Solar and Ocean Energy Renewable energy solutions, including solar panels and ocean-driven systems, provide the resort with self-sufficient power while reducing its environmental footprint.

2. Coral restoration initiatives will actively support the island’s marine ecosystem, with coral nurseries established to enhance biodiversity and marine health.

3. Efficient and Eco-Friendly Operations Back-of-house operations reflect a deep commitment to environmental responsibility, featuring an on-site biomass energy centre powered by local coconut biomass and a photovoltaic (PV) water treatment system. Additionally, the use of prefabricated and, in some cases, recycled materials throughout the construction process will further minimize environmental impact, ensuring that the resort’s development is as sustainable as possible.

“Our goal was to create a place where nature and luxury coexist seamlessly. This resort provides a space for guests to reconnect with nature through design that respects and enhances the surrounding environment.”

This latest venture by AIMA Construction and Baca Architects sets a new standard in eco-conscious luxury, offering travelers an unforgettable experience in a breathtaking, responsibly developed environment. The island resort at Baa Atoll stands as a testament to the possibilities of sustainable luxury, poised to serve the needs of the modern, environmentally conscious traveler.

A Luxurious Centrepiece

Overwater Villas Inspired by Manta Rays -  a collection of 68 luxurious lodges designed with deep consideration for the island’s natural beauty and biodiversity. We pay homage to the graceful manta rays often spotted in the surrounding waters. Each lodge elegantly mimics the gentle curves of the manta ray, with sweeping roofs and curved walls that look out over private pools and endless ocean vistas.

Reimagining the Resort

Bringing the Forest to your fingertips and the coral reef to your doorstep. Be it spa, kids club or high tea in the treetop canopy, every aspect of this resort prioritises a reconnection with nature, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious luxury.
