Making Space for Water
As first the motorcar transformed 20th century town planning, so it will be water that shapes our communities in the 21st century. Baca is internationally recognised for innovation in flood-resilient and adaptable architecture and spatial-planning. Their work demonstrates the leading role that architecture can play in addressing these crucial issues.
AQUATECTURE:
Buildings and cities designed to live and work with water.

RESEARCH
Public Realm
“Our public realm projects are developed with a focus on flood resilience, integrating advanced research to address the challenges living with dynamic water. We protect vital commercial assets, whilst finding opportunities for vibrant public spaces, balancing the dynamic nature of water with the need for flexible, accessible environments that invite engagement which address our current and future climate concerns."
Research
Research and Development is embedded within the DNA of the practice. Baca believes that cities which embrace and take advantage of water will be best placed to meet the social, economic and environmental challenges of the next 20 – 30 years and beyond. ‘Aquatecture’ is a water centric approach in which development goals, flood resilience and adaptation to climate change are reconciled in projects in, on or near water. This approach can unlock strategic urban areas, waterfront sites and dockland areas that could otherwise struggle to be developed. Our philosophy informs our books, industry guidance and policy development. This serious foundation supports a sense of playfulness and appreciation of both beauty and history to create future-proofed cities full of life, vitality and joy. The publications below are a culmination of over a decade worth of research.
